Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach used within manual osteopathic treatment that focuses on the craniosacral system — the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
The craniosacral system has a subtle rhythmic movement that practitioners are trained to detect and work with. Restrictions or imbalances in this system can affect the central nervous system and contribute to a wide range of health problems throughout the body.
Using very light touch — often no more than the weight of a nickel — the therapist monitors the rhythm of the craniosacral system to detect potential restrictions and imbalances. They then use gentle techniques to release those restrictions and improve the function of the central nervous system.
Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is used to support:
- ▸Chronic pain and headaches/migraines
- ▸Stress and tension-related disorders
- ▸Nervous system regulation and burnout
- ▸TMJ dysfunction
- ▸Neck and back pain
- ▸Post-concussion recovery
- ▸Sleep difficulties
- ▸Fibromyalgia
What to Expect in a Session
During a session, you remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a treatment table. The therapist uses extremely light touch on different parts of your body — typically starting at the head, sacrum, or feet. Many people experience deep relaxation during the session.
How It Fits Within Osteopathic Treatment
At The G.O.A.T. Sport Medicine Clinic, craniosacral therapy is one of the tools used within our manual osteopathic treatment approach. Our therapist Sophia Eschrich integrates craniosacral work with other osteopathic techniques including joint mobilization, fascial release, and visceral manipulation to provide comprehensive, whole-body care.
